Mid-Century Modern Sherlock Holmes

Gautam Rao has been a passionate Sherlock Holmes fan since he was a twelve-year-old in Bangalore, India. He read a battered copy of the Doubleday edition of The Complete Sherlock Holmes, handed down from his grandfather. His love of Mid-Century art and design blossomed with many visits to the Eero Saarinen-designed Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. Particularly influential are the playful Alexander Girard-designed interiors of the Miller House.

This book imagines the Sherlock Holmes stories set in the Mad Men era– Sherlock Holmes lounging in an Eames chair before a crackling fire, Professor Moriarty crouched under a Sputnik lamp. With a sprinkling of Edward Hopper, a dash of Hitchcock (think "North By Northwest"), this book of illustrations reimagines Sherlock Holmes in the Mid-Century era. Journey from the Victorian age to Modernism; from the yellow fogs of Baker Street to the sunny pool decks of Palm Springs.
